Om Gan Ganpataye Namah

Today September 15, 2007 is Ganesh Chaturthi - celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesh. This festival is celebrated with great passion and devotion by Hindus in India and all over the world.Ganesha is known as Vighnavinayaka or one who removes all obstacles. He is considered to be the God of wisdom, prudence and prosperity.Every religious ceremony starts with the worship of Lord Ganesh. I wanted to share one of the few stories about Lord Ganesh I heard in my childhood…

Lord Ganesha and Lord Subramanya are the sons of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.Once Lord Ganesha and Lord Subramanya had an argument as to who was older among the two. To resolve their dispute they asked Lord Shiva who said the desion will be based on whoever would make a tour of the whole world and come back first to the starting point had the right to be the elder.

Lord Subramanya flew immediately on his vehicle, the peacock to take a tour of the world. Lord Ganesh on the other hand rotated around his parents and asked for his prize. On this Lord Shiva asked him that “how can I declare you as the older when you did not take a tour of the world?”To This Lord Ganesha replied ” But I went around my parents and they represent the world to me” .The dispute was settled in his favor who was hereafter known as the elder among the two brothers.

Wishing you all happy Ganesh Chaturthi. May Ganpati Bappa bless you with his choicest blessings.
